The Holiday Bay Business Owners Association met on the first Monday of every month. Today, July 1, was one such Monday, and a monthly meeting was being held despite the fact that almost everyone was busy with preparations for the Fourth of July weekend. The Fourth was on a Thursday this year, so the traveling carnival was set to arrive tomorrow, the parade was scheduled for Thursday morning, and the fireworks show would commence after dark on Thursday evening. There was also a community softball tournament, a pancake breakfast, and bands and crafts in the park over the weekend. In addition, pretty much every mom-and-pop shop on the main streets of the small town had sales and special offers going on all week.
“The local animal shelter is holding a pet adoption clinic on Saturday,” one of the women whose name I had not yet learned informed the group. “They wanted to use the bandstand, but the bands we have scheduled for the afternoon need to use it. I suggested to the animal shelter folks that they use the grassy area at the foot of the bandstand, but they were afraid that having the bands playing so close to the animals would have an adverse effect on them. Then I asked the shelter folks if they would be willing to move over to the high school parking lot, but they pointed out that the park was the happening place to be, and they really wanted the increased exposure the bandstand area would provide.”
“Who was scheduled first?” a woman wearing a smart business suit asked.
“The pet adoption folks applied to use the bandstand months ago. The events committee didn’t schedule the bands and other events to be held in the park until well after. I suppose if the decision comes down to first come, first served, we will need to move the bands and allow the pet adoption folks to use the park. If we decide that an event to bring in tourists and promote the community is more important, though, I’m sure we can find a way to force the pet adoption folks to move over to the high school.”
Personally, I felt like the pet adoption should be held in the park because they had reserved the area well ahead of the event committee, but being new to the group I decided to listen rather than offer an opinion. At least for now.
“We’ve been featuring bands in the park over the Fourth of July weekend for years,” one of the men offered. “The committee might not have officially applied for the permit until after the pet adoption folks did, but there should be some sort of grandfathering in at work here. The animal shelter folks must have known that the park was going to be utilized for family events that particular weekend.”
“I’m sure they did,” the moderator answered. “Which is probably why they wanted to hold their clinic that particular weekend.”
“Is the only event affected by the pet adoption clinic the bands?” asked a woman I recognized as owning a bakery.
